Raphaela Rosella (Rosie) first became involved with BE in 2006: first as a participant and then as a young leader. Rosie in now completing her Honours year in Photography and her major project involves Roro and her family. Rosie first met Roro through BE’s projects in Moree. Here Rosie gives us a sneak preview of her latest work.
As early motherhood is often presented as a ‘failure of planning’ and an irrational choice, it is important to explore the complexities of social disadvantage and early motherhood. Through a documentary framework, You didn’t take away my future, you gave me a new one (a continuation of We met a little early, but I get to love you longer) this project seeks to privilege the voices of three young mothers and present their experiences and interpretations of their past, present and future. Through photo-documentary practice and audio-scapes, the project seeks to investigate counter-narratives that present a more complex account of the lived experience of young mothers who have experienced social disadvantage.
